George Moses Horton was the first African American author to be published in the United States. Born a slave on a North Carolina tobacco plantation\, his extraordinary literary talent resulted in his being named the Poet Laureate of Chatham County\, where he spent most of his life. Between the Lines is a monthly book club that explores our local area's rich past through engaging reads that connect our local stories to the larger sweep of American history. All are welcome\, and admission is free.
